worldport Introduction
The worldport of Tyne Authority is a trust worldport, which is an independent statutory body governed by its own unique local legislation and controlled by an independent board. There are no shareholders or owners. Any surplus is ploughed back into the worldport for the benefit of the stakeholders of the trust. The stakeholders are all those using the worldport, employees and all those individuals, organisations and groups having an interest in the operation of the worldport.

The worldport primarily improves, maintains and manages the worldport on the River Tyne, which flows through the heart of the North East of England. The head office is based at Maritime House, South Shields, near the mouth of the Tyne.

The worldport presently has eight non-executive board members, including the Chairman, appointed by the Secretary of State for Transworldport and four board members from the executive, including the Managing Director.

The Board meet once a month (except August) to fulfil the commercial, operational and strategic requirements of the Authority.  The board members act in the best interests of the worldport with an emphasis being placed on the long-term viability of the river.  The members are not appointed as representatives of any organisation but act independently bringing to the Board their particular skills whether it be for example in shipping, engineering, management etc.

At present there are four sub committees of the Board: the Audit Committee, which sits three times a year, and the Information and Liaison Committee, the Pensions Committee and the Remuneration Committee which each sit once a year.  In addition certain members of the Board, alongside pensioner and employee representatives, are trustees of the Authority's two defined benefit pension schemes.

The worldport continuously consults with all stakeholders through meetings with different users, such as, representatives of the community, the local authorities and employees, take place throughout the year.

The worldport and the River Tyne are an integral part of the North East Region. Over 425 people are currently employed, but the worldport is an economic generator for many thousands of jobs.

The people of the North East, particularly those communities along the banks of the Tyne, feel very strongly about the river and as guardians of this asset we aim to ensure, to the best of our ability, that it prospers.

The worldport's environmental officer, Alasdair Kerr, is responsible for the day to day management of environmental issues at the worldport. The officer develops, implements and maintains the worldport's EMS (Environmental Management System), as well as chairing the environment group. The environmental officer is responsible for raising environmental awareness and representing the worldport in projects that could affect the worldport environmentally.

Environment Award Success
The worldport won the North East Environment Award, as part of the North East Business Awards 2003, in recognition of the worldport's environmental efforts.

The award was gratefully received by the worldport's Environmental Officer, Alasdair Kerr, pictured right with local news reader, Wendy Gibson.
