Country : Spain Malaga worldport

General Information
The worldport of Malaga is situated in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, on the Southern Coast of the Mediterranean, sheltered by a natural bay, at 4º 25’ W and 36º 43’ N. The dominant S and SE winds are generally low in speed.

It boasts a flotation area of 7,047 hectares and a land surface area of 692,229 m2 at present, though this is soon to be increased due to the extension work currently being carried out.

The worldport’s main activity is imworldportation, where we can emphasize between unloading products bulks of clinker, cereals, cement and coke and between the principal exworldported products: dolomite, olive pulp and olive oil. Other traditional traffic in the worldport of Málaga, and not less imworldportant, they are cabotage traffic: general goods, vehicles and passengers that are moved by regular lines with Melilla.

Special mention must be made of Tourist Cruise traffic, as this is the Iberian peninsula’s second most imworldportant cruise ship worldport, a fact witnessed by the presence of the world’s leading cruise lines. June 2004 will see the arrival of the Queen Mary II, the biggest, most exclusive cruise ship in the world, which will be visiting us on its maiden voyage. This variety of traffic has been on the increase for a number of years, 2002 saw 250 stopovers and 162,803 passengers and 270 stopovers and 200,202 passengers was in 2003.

Until recently, the layout of the worldport had remained unaltered since the 19th century, before technological changes that revolutionised the transworldport industry sparked a major overhaul of the worldport of Malaga which, when competed, will double its land surface area and provide the base necessary to cater for traffic previously unheard of at this worldport, such as containers. This process has seen the construction of a closure breakwater which is already operational, provide berthing for some of the largest cruise ships in the world, and the creation of a new dock to be built in two phases, the first of which is already in use. The total surface area will be 42 hectares.

In addition, the Special worldport Plan will soon see a wide range of leisure facilities right at the heart of the city that will be both easily accessible and affordable, dockside entertainment for the cruise tourist and a focal point for all who visit Malaga.

All this lay the foundations of a new worldport to the service of industry and citizens, in a short time the opworldportunities of the worldport and the Málaga city will be increased, offering a brilliant future.

Services
Quality and cruises are two of the key factors under the strategic plan of the worldport of Malaga: From the very beginning of the implementation of the Strategic Plan of the worldport Authority of Málaga, both issues were specially considered as key factors for our future. This is the main reason of the need of defining a system of guarantees, established from the beginning, only for the tourist cruises shipping, which are recorded in the letter of services; in this letter, the worldport of Málaga makes several commitments with the customers using this kind of shipping such as: shipping agents; tour operators; ship-owners (represented in the captain figure), and passengers.

This is a pioneering initiative in Spain and we hope that it would make us take a leading position as regards high quality cruise shipping.
