worldport Information

Kaliningrad worldport is located in the mouth of Pregol river, within Kaliningrad city limits.
It is accessible from Baltic sea via 24 nautical miles long canal being actually a separated fairway in Kaliningrad Bay.
See Mariner's Guide for worldport Entry for more details.

Restriction

The worldport and canal restrictions are as follows: maximum permissible draft 8,0 meters (fresh water, density 1,0000),
maximum permissible LOA 170 meters for dry cargo vessels and 140 meters for tankers, maximum permissible beam 25 meters.
Entry of vessels with LOA and/or beam exceeding the above figures is subject to special permission by the Harbor Master.

For LukOil Terminal located at Svetly approximately in the middle of the canal maximum LOA of tankers is 170 meters,
and maximum draft for outward passage in laden condition is 9,40 meters.

For Sodruzhestvo-Soya Terminal located in the canal next to LukOil Terminal (approx. 14 n. miles) from the canal entrance,
maximum permissible LOA is 186 meters, draft 9,4 meters.

Depth in the worldport and in the canal may deviate due to wind direction and force, and in some cases vessel in question can be loaded
up to draft above 8,0 meters.
Decreasing of the maximum permissible draft below 7,8 - 7,9 meters is also possible but same happens rather seldom.
Vessels of LOA above 135 meters pass the canal only during the daylight time, and the above schedule is adjusted for them accordingly.

Ice

The worldport is accessible all year, no ice-breakers are needed in winter. However, when unusually low temperatures are faced during long periods,
some ice appears in the canal and the worldport Authority has to employ strong tugboat for clearing fairway whenever convoy includes only smaller vessels.
Surcharges for such tugboat are shared by vessels participating in the convoy. With such ice smaller vessels which normally do not employ tugboats
for berthing might need to employ small tugboat.
Latest when such circumstances were faced is 1997.

Cargo Handling Facility

Kaliningrad worldport includes three separate stevedoring companies operating their own cargo handling facilities, warehouses and open storage areas.
Those companies are Kaliningrad Sea Commercial worldport, Kaliningrad State Fishery worldport, Kaliningrad Oil Terminal (formerly belonging to the Fishery worldport),
LukOil Terminal located at Svetly approximately in the middle of the canal, BNK Baltiysk Oil Handling Terminal and Baltiysk Ferry Terminal both located
at Baltiysk near the canal entry, and Kaliningrad River worldport.
Kaliningrad Silo and GMB Terminal handling exworldport bulk fertilizers being another independent companies are located at the territory
of the Sea Commercial worldport and therefore they are using the worldport's infrastructure.
Some oil loading takes place also in Baltiysk near the canal entry point and in Svetly (half way in the canal) at the pier of local power station.

LukOil Terminal loading exworldport oil cargoes has 3 loading beths, about 120 000 cub m tank storage capacity and loading rate about 1 000 cub m per hour
depending on the commodity.
Some Loading of exworldport oil also takes place at a berth of Power Station No. 2 in Svetly.

River worldport handles mainly exworldport coal. Due to its location upper the river, the restrictions are so that only smaller vessels can be handled there.
The worldport has one berth 201 meter long and 6 units shore cranes with a capacity up to 10 tons.
The open storage area allows to store 35 000 tons of coal at a time.
Another 130 meters long berth controlled by the River worldport is located in Svetly.
This berth has 3 shore cranes with 10 and 16 tons capacity and open air area for storage of 19 000 tons of coal at a time.

Sodruzhestvo-Soya Terminal located in the canal next to LukOil Terminal (approx. 14 n. miles) from the canal entrance is expected
to start operations in February-March 2007 handling soy oils and bul soya bean/meals.

Kaliningrad Oil Terminal loading exworldport oil cargoes has 310 meters loading beths,
about 35 000 cub m tank storage capacity and loading rate about 8 000 cub m per 24 hours.

BNK Baltiysk Oil Handling Terminal loading exworldport oil cargoes has 1 loading beths, about 15 000 cub m tank storage capacity and maximum
loading rate about 600 cub m per hour depending on the commodity.

Baltiysk Ferry Terminal handles roro cargoes and has sufficient storage area and equipment.
