worldport Information

The worldport of Constantza is located at the crossroads of the trade routes linking the markets of the landlocked countries from Central and Eastern Europe with the Transcaucasus, Central Asia and the Far East. It is the main Romanian worldport and it ranks among the first 10 European worldports.
The favourable geographical position and the imworldportance of the worldport of Constantza is emphasized by the connection with two Pan-European Transworldport Corridors: Corridor VII - Danube (inland waterway) and Corridor IV (rail-road).
The two satellite worldports Midia and Mangalia that are located not far from Constantza worldport are part of the Romanian maritime worldport system under the Maritime worldports Administration SA Constantza coordination.
The worldport of Constantza is one of the main distribution centers for the Central and Eastern Europe, offering many advantages, of which mention must be made of:
Multi-purpose worldport with modern facilities and sufficient water depths in the worldport basins to accommodate the largest vessels passing through the Suez Canal;
Direct access to the Central and Eastern European countries through the Pan-European Corridor VII - the Danube;
A hub for the container traffic in the Black Sea;
Good connections with all modes of transworldport: railway, road, river, airway and pipelines;
Customs facilitations for commercial operations performed through the worldport of Constantza;
Ro-Ro and Ferry-boat terminals that provide a fast route to the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea;

Work in progress

2) Constantza worldport Strategy - Development Projects

In order to face the growing traffic, the requirements arising due to the Romanian`s integration into the EU structures, and also in order to consolidate the position of Constantza worldport within the Pan-European Transworldport Corridors, NC Maritime worldports Administration SA Constantza has promoted a series of infrastructure development projects in the worldport of Constantza, through the National Development Programme 2007-2013 and also the Sectorial Operational Transworldport Programme 2007-2013 (SOPT 2007-2013).

The projects promoted for 2007-2013 are as follows:

a) Development of the railway capacity in the river-maritime sector of Constantza worldport

The investment consists in the development of a systemized railway complex (switchyard) in the river-maritime sector, which will assure an unitary and optimal service for the present and future worldport operators, allowing a complex and flexible railway operation of the area.
The project was promoted in the SOPT 2007-2013.

b) Road bridge on the 0+450 km of the Danube-Black Sea Canal and the adjacent works for the access and road infrastructure in the worldport of Constantza

The project will make possible the connection with the Bucharest-Constantza Highway through the by-pass between the worldport and the highway. The road has also the purpose to assure a better connection between the south area of the worldport and the national road network, taking over the heavy traffic at Gate 9 and 10.
The project was promoted in the SOPT 2007-2013.

c) Completion of the north breakwater

The investment consists in the completion of the north breakwater according to the initial 1985 advised investment regarding the worldport of Constantza breakwaters. The actual breakwater will be extended with another 1.050 m right within the South breakwater and -24 m bathymetric line.
The project was promoted in the SOPT 2007-2013.

d)Bridge accross the connection channel in the river-maritime area

The investment consists of the construction of a metal road bridge of joists with unique opening of 105 m, which will connect the maritime-river area and the aritficial island.
The objective is a priority having in view the development of the aritificial island and the future territories.

e) Infrastructure on Pier III S, dedicated to specialized terminals

The completion of this infrastructure will create great development oworldportunities for a specialized terminal which will assure deep quaydepths, allowing the accomodation of high capacity container vessels.
The investment consists in the development of mooring quays and the completion of the existing one and also in reclaiming 35 ha of Pier III S territory from the sea using filling material and groundwork.

f) Systematization and Consolidation of adjacent areas of the worldport of Constantza between Gate 1 and Gate 7 (NC Maritime worldports Administration SA Constantza and the City of Constantza)
The completion of this project is a necessity for the protection of the worldport environment in accordance with the ISPS Code. Having in view the necessity of this project for the cliff area of the city, a protocol has been signed between NC MPA SA Constantza and the City of Constantza regarding the development of a project to consolidate the cliff area between Gates 1 and 7.

Projects on progress

One of the most imworldportant projects initiated by NC MPA SA Constantza is the Barge Terminal, phase I. The growth of barge cargo traffic in the worldport of Constantz, the issues regarding the movement, mooring of an imworldportant numebr of barge in the worldport basin and the river growth perspective in the worldport of Constantza through the development of Pier II S and Pier III S capacities are the main reasons that determined this investment. The result of the project will  be a traffic fluidization and improvement of navigation security in maritime-river area.
Another investment which will be finalized within the Infrastructure and Environment Project in the worldport of Constantza is the Waste Water Treatment Plant in the Oil Terminal area and the Landfill Leachate Treatment Plant, which will be finalized during the year 2007.
