Port Klang, Malaysia’s leading gateway is situated in the State of Selangor, on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Its strategic location in the Klang Valley, the richest and most developed region of the country – and only 40 kilometers away from the federal capital, Kuala Lumpur – has ensured its consistent growth as a premier gateway. Based on a government directive in 1993, the port is being developed as the national load center and transshipment hub.
Port Klang has two main gateways – Northport and Westports. Northport is operated by a consortium known as Northport (Malaysia) Berhad and Westports by Westports Malaysia Sdn. Bhd..
Port Klang services a hinterland that covers major existing and planned growth centres in Selangor. Within its hinterland are the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at Sepang, the federal government’s administrative center at Putrajaya and major industrial areas.
Port Klang is currently the top 16 container ranked port in the world and handles 46.4% of Malaysia’s seaborne trade. Its location makes it the first port of call for ships on the eastbound leg and the last port of call on the westbound leg of the Far East-Europe trade.
The port has trade connections with more than 180 countries and links with 500 ports around the world.
REGULATORY AUTHORITY
Port Klang Authority (PKA) is the regulatory authority for port operations in Port Klang. PKA, which was established in 1963 as a statutory body, now acts as a landlord and regulatory authority as well as trade facilitator actively involved in port promotion and infrastructure development to turn Port Klang into a major regional transshipment hub.It also administers the Free Zone in Port Klang.
PORT KLANG FREE ZONE
Port Klang Authority is undertaking a project i.e. Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) which is the development of a regional distribution hub on Pulau Indah, Port Klang. This development is in line with the government’s policy to develop Port Klang into a regional distribution hub as well as a trade and logistics centre.
PKFZ is designed to promote entreport trade and manufacturing industries involved in producing goods primarily for export and is both a Free Commercial Zone (FCZ) for commercial activities and a Free Industrial Zone (FIZ) for manufacturing activities making it one of its kind in Malaysia.
