Yang Kee Logistics Pte Ltd in Singapore
Mar 18, 2010
Established in 1997, Yang Kee has grown to be one of the top 5 logistics and warehousing companies in Singapore, with annual revenue of $30 million and market presence in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and China.
One key ingredients of Yang Kee’s success is its management’s strong and consistent focus on developing new growth opportunities, building management & people capabilities, and improving efficiency and productivity. Indeed, Yang Kee’s new chemical warehouse and distribution hub, for which we are ground-breaking today, is the cornerstone of Yang Kee’s effort to grow its chemical logistics business, riding on Singapore’s strong chemical industry and rising demand for chemicals in the booming emerging markets in Asia. This enables Yang Kee to diversify from the FMCG and oil & gas market, and develop a third anchor business. With this new specialised chemical storage capability, Yang Kee anticipates its chemical logistics business to eventually account for 20% of its total turnover, an increase from 5% today.
Developing its people is another key priority for Yang Kee. It has tapped on SPRING’s HR capability programme to improve its HR systems and practices, and leveraged on SPRING’s ETP to bring in promising young talent from the universities.
The third area is improving productivity. In 2008, with support from SPRING’s Logistics Capability Development Programme, Yang Kee developed and implemented an integrated E-logistics system. This system enabled Yang Kee to improve efficiency by 25%. It also provided management good visibility on the daily operations of the company. The new hub will allow Yang Kee to consolidate its existing operations in 6 different locations into 1 centralised hub, and enable the company to implement RFID and transportation tracking system to improve the efficiency of its operations. Together with the E-logistics system, the total productivity improvement is expected to be significant with estimated cost savings of some $2.7 million per year.
We are impressed with the achievements of Yang Kee Logistics and excited by its vision and drive to seize new growth opportunities in the future. With its focus on people and continued enhancements in productivity, the company is a good role model for other SMEs. As the enterprise development agency, SPRING will continue to help SMEs upgrade their capabilities and strengthen their market positions in the global market. We hope that more SMEs will aspire to be like Yang Kee and grow to be leaders in their respective markets, not only locally but also globally.
